First of all As a first step please make a copy of the Excel Option Calculator file. Always keep an untouched version of the original file saved somewhere. You can copy by right-clicking the file, choosing "copy" and then right-clicking the desktop or the window you are in and choosing "paste". Opening the spreadsheet - Macro Security The Excel Option Calculator does not require installing anything new besides Microsoft Excel 97 or newer. It does, however, use Excel Visual Basic applications (macros). For the Option Calculator to work properly, Excel macro security needs to be set to "medium" (Tools - Options - Security - Macro Security). In this setting Excel will still ask you every single time when you open a file with macros if you want to activate them, you still have total control about what you open. Note: After changing the Macro Security settings you need to close Excel and reopen it in order for the changes to go into effect. Zooming the worksheets for optimal viewing In Excel terminology, the Option Calculator is a workbook, which contains several worksheets. You can select the worksheets by clicking on the tabs at the bottom of the screen ("position", "graphs", etc.). Don't see the tabs? Make them visible by going to: Tools - Options - View, and down in "Window Options" check "Sheet Tabs".
Everybody has a different screen resolution, a different amount of toolbars visible etc. For optimal viewing and navigation you can use a combination of zooming and adjusting the window size until the desired view is achieved. If you have a big screen you may not want the Option Calculator to occupy the whole screen.
Zooming: Go to the "misc" worksheet by clicking on the tab and zoom all sheets up or down at once using the buttons in column I. Zoom and/or adjust the window size until rows 1 to 30 and columns A to J of the "misc" sheet fit exactly into your window. A double check: On the position sheet rows 1 to 31 and columns A to M should fit on one screen page. Navigation Navigation within the Excel Option Calculator is based on screen pages. Besides clicking on the worksheet tabs I have included quite a few buttons that take you directly from on place to another. If you have zoomed the worksheets to the correct size all that is needed to get around is clicking on buttons and using the PageUp and PageDown keys. Comments in the cells - red triangles You can find comments with useful information and explanations throughout the program, indicated by a red triangle in the top right corner of a cell. I will not repeat all of those comments in this manual; many of them contain additional, but not essential information. Simply move your mouse over the red triangle to see the comments. Color codes and cell protection Like the previous version, the color blue indicates places where the user can enter or change information. Either the cell content is written in blue or there is a blue double frame around the cells where the user can make inputs - usually to override defaults. In this version I have protected all cells that should not be altered. They usually contain formulas and will not even be selectable.
The only place where in the beginning this might cause some confusion is the 20 option lines on the "position" sheet. The button "clean up" will blank and protect all lines that have no long or short position indicated in column A. To unprotect the lines for entering a different position with more legs click on the button "add more legs". How about going to the position sheet now and trying out those 2 buttons before proceeding.
The worksheet protection is not password protected. If you want to unprotect a sheet for changing font sizes or colors or column widths etc., simply unprotect with Tools - Protection - Unprotect Sheet. (Running any macro will protect it again automatically). |
